Chapter 6

It took Xia Tian about ten minutes to walk from the bedroom to the study room, which was less than 20 meters.

Xia Tian wanted to beat himself up.

If time were to be rewinded back to half an hour ago, he would not let Liang Qingfeng sign on behalf of Han Cheng! He would rather lose face in front of Han Cheng.

Originally it was just poor grades, now it was deceiving…

Xia Tian looked at the text messages on his mobile phone. He was now truly a little scared.

Would Han Cheng tell his mother about this?

Xia Tian wanted to eat his phone in regret.

But no matter how scared he was, Xia Tian knew that Han Cheng wouldn’t have forgotten this matter. Xia Tian stood in front of the study, took a deep breath, and prepared to apologise directly and strive for leniency.

“Uncle Han…” Xia Tian gently opened the door of the study, his voice low and pitiful.

This was the first time he was entering Han Cheng’s study.

Han Cheng had said on the first day he came for him to treat this place as his home, and everything was left to his own discretion. However, Xia Tian knew that there were some things to avoid; Han Cheng’s study room and bedroom.

Even though it was said to be a study room, there were only a few books. It was basically Han Cheng’s private office. The decorations were simple and atmospheric, but it was inexplicably oppressive.

Han Cheng looked at the computer screen quietly and said, “Come here.”

Xia Tian walked to Han Cheng’s large desk step by step.

After ignoring Xia Tian for a minute, Han Cheng subsequently shifted his eyes from the computer screen, looked at Xia Tian and casually said, “Do you want to know how the last person who asked Liang Qingfeng to forge documents that I should have signed ended up?”

Xia Tian froze for a second and then crumbled. Is Uncle Han trying to get away with murder? ! ! !

Han Cheng looked at Xia Tian’s stunned expression and was very satisfied. Smiling, he continued, “It’s fine if you don’t want to know. Sit down.”

Xia Tian was so scared that he almost cried, and shivered. “I… I prefer standing.”

“Alright.” Han Cheng had a private meeting for more than two hours. He was a little tired at the moment. He relaxed on the back of his chair and tapped his slender fingers on the table. “Show me your report card.”

Xia Tian had already guessed that Han Cheng would want to see it, so he brought it with him. His face flushed as he took out the report card from the pocket of his pyjamas and spread it out in front of Han Cheng.

Han Cheng looked at Liang Qingfeng’s forged signature and raised his eyebrows. “It really does look alike.”

Xia Tian wanted to cry even more.

Han Cheng picked up the report card, and his attention was immediately attracted by Xia Tian’s unexpected results. After a while, he read out loud, “Mathematics…27…”

Han Cheng raised his eyes and looked at Xia Tian, “I remember that you’re a science student.”

Xia Tian nodded shamefully.

“Your previous teacher…” Han Cheng couldn’t understand, “ Why didn’t he suggest letting you study literature?”

Xia Tian stuttered, “The previous school didn’t… didn’t separate subjects. Because… Because I got good grades in science, when I enrolled here, I could study it.”

Han Cheng looked at Xia Tian’s science scores with an average score of fewer than 40 points, and repeated mechanically, “Science scores are good… Your math teacher…”

“Is an Englishman.” Xia Tian lamented.

Han Cheng closed his eyes, swallowed back his acrimonious remarks, and nodded, “I can tell from this… Your English is not bad.”

Xia Tian hurriedly said, “Thank you, Uncle Han, for praising me. I will work harder.”

Han Cheng was very good at restraining himself and ignored this topic. He put the report card aside and said, “We will talk about your results later on. Let’s talk about the forgery of the signature… Are you ready to apologise to me?”

Xia Tian knew that he was in the wrong and hurriedly said, “Apologise… Uncle Han, I’m sorry.”

“Your apology is quite sincere. I will spare you this time.” Han Cheng took the report card, unscrewed his pen, and canceled out the signature that Liang Qingfeng had previously signed. He signed beside it and continued to ask, “Will you hate Liang Qingfeng because of this issue?”

Xia Tian immediately responded without thinking and said, “Hate? I wouldn’t…”

“That’s good, you can’t blame him for this.” Han Cheng looked at Liang Qingfeng’s forged and expressive signature and said, “His position is special, yet sensitive. Every day, He has to process many confidential documents for me. Such a person, it is impossible to avoid having suspicion.”

Xia Tian choked in his heart, full of guilt, and whispered, “I… I will apologise to him.”

“You don’t have to apologise.” Han Cheng smiled, “Do not think that he is actually a good person. If he really wants to avoid arousing suspicion completely, he would not have agreed to your request. He was also not afraid to offend you. However, in front of you, he helped you sign, and at the back reported you… He did it on purpose.”

With the tacit understanding between Han Cheng and Liang Qingfeng over the years, Han Cheng knew that Liang Qingfeng realised he liked Xia Tian very much, and he had intentionally made things worse so that he could poke fun at Xia Tian.

It was really entertaining.

Not only that, but Xia Tian’s attitude of admitting mistakes also made Han Cheng feel good about his character. He originally thought that Xia Tian would rush to blame Liang Qingfeng as soon as he entered the door and try his best to push his mistakes onto others. Unexpectedly, Xia Tian just apologised.

Although he was a little bit naughty, his heart was still very good.

So small punishments and big reprimands would do.

Han Cheng said, “Your grades are indeed a big problem. I didn’t expect it… I will let my people contact your teachers to make them put in more effort and arrange more basic-focused tasks.”

Xia Tian nodded, “Okay… I will trouble you.”

“In addition, every day after school, come to the study room to read.” Han Cheng paused and added, “It will be easier for me to supervise you.”

Xia Tian lost his laughter and said, “Do I really have to go to the study room…”

Han Cheng smiled, “Not willing?”

“No, no, no.” Xia Tian’s legs were still like jelly. “I’m afraid it might affect your work.”

“You won’t be able to affect me.” Han Cheng concluded, “This arrangement will last for three months. After three months… We will look at the transcript and use the results as the basis to judge whether you will continue to have make-up classes in the study room.”

Han Cheng thought for a while and added, “No more lying. I may call your teacher to find out the situation. If you lie again… I will punish you for multiple crimes. When the time comes, I may contact Chairman Yan.”

Xia Tian whimpered, “You might as well contact my mother…”

“Mother-in-law is too gentle and not deterrent enough.” Han Cheng smiled, “I guess you are more afraid of Chairman Yan.”

Xia Tian thought. No, that’s not the case… Right now, I am more afraid of you.

Of course, he didn’t dare to speak that thought out loud.

Han Cheng thought that Xia Tian was afraid that he would really give small report to Yan Lihua, smiled, and comforted him, “I’m just kidding. What good will it do to tell your grandmother? In front of people, you educate your child; behind closed doors, you train your wife.1 This is a saying that when your child has done wrong, you educated them in public. It is a form of strict admonishment but it also means to apologise to others for your child’s wrongdoing. However, if your wife had done something wrong, don’t badmouth her in front of others. Only when there are just the two of you, quietly correct her. In this way, both sides will not hurt their reputation and remain to have their dignity. This is also to have respect for your wife. If you are not obedient, I can only educate you behind closed doors.”

Xia Tian was scalded by Han Cheng’s inadvertent phrase, “Training the wife behind closed doors”, and his cheeks turned slightly red.

“Okay, go to sleep.” Han Cheng hit a stick and gave a sweet date,2This means that Han Cheng gave a good scolding to Xia Tian and now he is trying to pacify him. Go to bed earlier.”

Xia Tian bid goodnight to Han Cheng and went back to his room with lingering fears.

This was the first time Han Cheng felt so refreshed after holding a separate criticism meeting. He rubbed the slightly sore back of his neck and went to sleep.

  1. The carrot and stick approach surprisingly works. As a child, my siblings and I were afraid of angering my father coz he beat us using a belt(which hurts more than a broom which my mother prefers)
Although he doesn’t do it all the time but sometimes when we were scolded or beaten he’d buy us a treat afterwards. In the end, we’d forget about the pain coz we’re distracted by the treat.

  2. I see. I’ve never had any bad reports so I don’t really understand how to motivate people who had bad grades.
    Interesting.
Thank you for the translation ❤️
