After returning home, Xia Tian hid the ring box.
Fortunately, Han Cheng kept wearing the ring and didn’t want to put it away, so he didn’t notice that the ring box was gone. Feeling relieved, Xia Tian unpacked his suitcase and sorted out the textbooks and homework he took to the hotel.
For the past two days, he kept playing and didn’t do much studying. The homework assigned to be done over the weekend was not completed. Xia Tian was afraid that Han Cheng would want to check so he hurriedly changed clothes. Taking advantage of the time before dinner, it took him half an hour to finish an English and Math test paper.
The English test papers were easy to complete as there were many multiple-choice questions. Filling up ABCD was based on intuition. Generally speaking, the rate of getting the correct answer by choosing option C was higher. The composition writing was to copy a paragraph of the reading comprehension and that was it. The math paper took a little more time but it was not complicated. Xia Tian quickly finished writing the test papers and secretly prayed that Han Cheng would only check the completion of the homework instead of actually checking each question one by one. Otherwise he’d be beaten.
As Han Cheng took a two-day rest, there should have been a lot of things to deal with when he came back. That was how Xia Tian comforted and reassured himself. When he was about to force himself to speedily complete a composition, his cell phone rang.
It was a text message from the class monitor. He was instantly pained when he glanced at it.
While Xia Tian was completing his school work, Han Cheng was also taking time to deal with the work that had been neglected these two days.
Xia Tian gently opened the door of the study room and whispered, “Uncle Han…”
“Speak.” Han Cheng didn’t look up and continued, “If you are hungry, then go eat first, don’t wait for me.”
“No, no.” Xia Tian shook his head. He walked to the desk, smiled a few times embarrassedly and said, “Then… do you have time next Friday?”
“No.” Han Cheng looked up. “What’s the matter?”
Xia Tian was instantly lost for words. “No…no.”
“Then it’s alright” Xia Tian choked up. He didn’t expect such an opening remark. Han Cheng blocked his long preparation with just a sentence. Xia Tian hurriedly said, “You can continue with what you were doing. I’m not hungry, eh…I will go down and see how the dinner is coming along.”
“You…” Han Cheng frowned, “You have a parent-teacher conference next Friday, don’t you know?”
When Xia Tian stopped in his tracks, turned his head and said in a daze, “I… just found out.”
“It’ll be Friday afternoon. After that, there will be an important party in the evening.” Han Cheng called up the next week’s schedule that Liang Qingfeng had sent him on Saturday, took a look and said, “There isn’t any other time. What are you intending to do?”
“No, nothing much.” Xia Tian tried to suppress the corners of his mouth that was not obedient and said, “When did you know that there was a parent-teacher meeting?”
“Saturday night.” Han Cheng said calmly, “Your teacher called Liang Qingfeng and told him to have a parent meeting at five o’clock on Friday afternoon.”
If Xia Tian were sensitive enough, he would have been able to tell that Han Cheng’s tone had changed a bit and was filled with suppressed unhappiness.
It was a pity that Xia Tian was not so observant. Han Cheng set aside time for him to hold a parent-teacher meeting, which made him happy. Xia Tian was polite and said, “If your evening party is very important, and if you are in a hurry, it’s okay if you don’t go. It’d be the same if Brother Liang were to go.”
Han Cheng’s eyes narrowed slightly, and after a second pause, he said, “Being married for such a long time, why are you still addressing him wrongly?”
Xia Tian was at a loss. “Huh?”
Han Cheng said, “Address him as Assistant Liang.”
“Assistant Liang…” Xia Tian repeated, and couldn’t help laughing. “Did Brother Liang request it? Hahaha, how can he be like my grandmother? So proud. Hahahaha.”
“In the company, don’t call me Grandmother, call me Chairman.” Xia Tian mimicked Yan Lihua’s tone and was overjoyed, “Big Brother Liang… ah no, did Assistant Liang tell you that? When we are in the company, don’t call me Big Brother Liang, address me as Assistant Liang. Hahahaha.”
Han Cheng snorted, neither admitting nor denying it. After correcting Xia Tian’s address to Liang Qingfeng, he continued the topic just now, “So you want him to go? Don’t think too much… Even if he were to go, he wouldn’t help you. I know how your grades are and what the teacher’s evaluation will be.”
Han Cheng lowered his head and took a pen, signed a few words and said, “Although I don’t understand where your baseless trust in him came from, I still want to remind you that he is not as harmless as you think.”
Xia Tian was taken aback and suddenly remembered the phone call he made to Liang Qingfeng a few days ago.
A layer of goosebumps appeared on Xia Tian’s back as he smiled dryly. “No, I didn’t mean that… Assistant Liang, does he often update you about me?”
Han Cheng smiled and said nothing.
Xia Tian was flustered and quickly changed the subject. “What was the Friday night party you just mentioned?”
“That party… Speaking of which, you too, have to go.” Han Cheng smiled at Xia Tian, “It’s your mother-in-law’s birthday party.”
Xia Tian’s face was hot and said, “It’s… her birthday huh. I’m sorry that I didn’t know. Of course I have to go. I’ll buy a gift either tomorrow or the day after.”
Xia Tian smiled and added, “I have a lot of pocket money recently, so I can buy a nice gift.”
Han Cheng remembered Xia Tian’s gambling money and smiled. “Forget it, lest you accidentally say it and let my mother hear it. I’ll probably be lectured non-stop. I have prepared the gift in advance and we’ll say that it’s given by the both of us.” Han Cheng put his pen aside, “However, my mother likes to be lively so there will probably be many people there. If you are afraid of being uncomfortable, you can go there later and just have the family dinner together.”
Xia Tian shook his head. “No, I can’t just take advantage and not do anything. Besides, it’s too rude to do that. It’s alright, there is nothing to be uncomfortable about.”
“Okay. I’ll always be with you.” During the conversation, Han Cheng finished his work and stood up as he concluded, “I’ll go with you for the parent-teacher meeting on Friday afternoon. After that, you’ll accompany me to the birthday banquet in the evening. Good… Let’s go downstairs. .”
Xia Tian’s impression of the parent-teacher meeting was generally that everyone would clean the classroom until it was spotlessly clean and then decorate it with flowers, write on the blackboard, “Welcome Parents”. Then when it was the specified time, parents would sit in their children’s seats and listen to the homeroom teacher speak.
Since young, there had been countless parent meetings, the content of which were always the same. But there were more aspects in private colleges. One of them was to let students go to the cooking classroom to make small refreshments for their parents in advance.
Friday afternoon came.
Xia Tian had previously heard his classmates talk about the parent meeting. Everyone seemed to have different reactions when they received the notice and the classmates didn’t think there was anything wrong. Everyone was accustomed to it. Xia Tian was afraid that everyone would laugh at him, being a country pumpkin from a private college so he pretended that he knew what would happen and didn’t ask much.
On Friday afternoon, after Chinese class, there were three self-study classes. Some students were called out one after another. Xia Tian was confused when his homeroom teacher entered the classroom, lightly tapped his table, and indicated to follow him. After leaving the classroom, both went to the conference room on the other side of the corridor.
Xia Tian opened the door and almost knelt down with a plop.
The conference room was divided into two rows. All of his subject teachers, the senior director and deputy director sat in one row. At a glance, Xia Tian felt immediate discomfort…
Too oppressive.
And Han Cheng was sitting opposite the teachers.
Of course, this was not the most exciting.
The most exciting thing was that the huge projector on the side of the conference room was clearly showing the test papers from Xia Tian’s midterm exams.
The huge bloody cross on the projector wiped out the glamorous sentiment that Han Cheng had come to hold a parent meeting for him before Xia Tian.
The class representative used to say that the parent-teacher meeting of this school was very abnormal. It was only then that Xia Tian understood.
If he knew this was going to happen… that day, by hook or by crook, he should have let Liang Qingfeng come.
Xia Tian couldn’t face seeing Han Cheng.
But unexpectedly, Han Cheng was much more calm than the teachers. He nodded to Xia Tian. “Come here.”
Xia Tian flushed, slowly fidgeting as he went over and stood next to the homeroom teacher, waiting to be lectured.
Upon seeing Xia Tian’s shame and anger, Han Cheng was amused and said nothing.
He looked at Xia Tian’s physics teacher and smiled. “Please continue.”
It was the first time the physics teacher met a student with such compelling test results and their guardian could still be so calm. He wiped his sweat and said, “In fact, it’s obvious that there is progress. The basic questions that he attempted, it is much better than before. But questions that test problem-solving skills, just like question 2…”
“He didn’t answer correctly. But I think the teacher’s grading standards were a bit harsh.” Han Cheng glanced at the question, understanding what was required and said, “He didn’t calculate the mass of the central celestial body in the end, but the previous calculation of the satellite rotation speed and the rotation angular velocity formula was not wrong. The specific value…”
Han Cheng spent two seconds mentally calculating the answer and said, “The calculation of the specific value is also correct. This heavy-weighted question has a full mark of 12 points. If I were to judge, I would give him at least four points instead of nothing.”
Han Cheng changed a more comfortable posture and said, “Of course, everyone’s standards of judging is different. Our school has always abided by the school motto of rigorous academic research. I can understand that it is strict.”
The physics teacher didn’t know that Xia Tian’s guardian was one of the school’s directors. He was shocked when Han Cheng opened the door and came in. Now he was even more nervous when asked by Han Cheng and replied, “Ah, yes… When we were judging the paper, because of how rushed it was and in order to save time… it may sometimes be a bit arbitrary.”
The physics teacher crossed out the scribbled zero and wrote a “4” on it.
Han Cheng smiled with satisfaction.
“Next.” Han Cheng turned to look at the chemistry teacher.
The chemistry teacher that was motioned to start was startled. Han Cheng covered his right hand with his left, gently rubbing the ring, and politely said, “Let’s take a look at his chemistry test paper again…”
The chemistry teacher silently wiped his drenched sideburns and projected Xia Tian’s exam.
Xia Tian’s homeroom teacher took a sip of tea and said in a low voice, “Those who know would see it as President Han coming to attend this parent-teacher meeting. However, for those who do not know, they’d think that he is here to check our work…”
Xia Tian stood by the homeroom teacher, bowing his head in shame, clenching his fists tightly, doing his best to prevent himself from laughing.
