Chapter 13 – Checking into a VIP ward

Translator: ChuRen/ YuQiChen

“The hospital is here. That’ll be 38 yuan. Will you pay with WeChat or Alipay?”

In the taxi, the driver glanced at the rearview mirror and saw the young man in the back leaning against the window, eyes closed, looking quite unwell.

Seeing no response from the passenger, the driver called out again, “Hey, young man?”

Yan Shu could faintly hear someone speaking beside him, but he couldn’t quite open his eyes.

As the car drove on, he felt his body deteriorating even more.

His voice was hoarse as he said, “Sorry, I need to get off here.”

He took out a 50 yuan note from his pocket, handed it to the driver, and got out of the car straight away. As he closed the door, he stumbled slightly.

“I don’t have change to give you. I can transfer you the money on WeChat… Hey, young man!”

Yan Shu didn’t hear the driver’s cries at all. His ears were ringing loudly, the rain outside making him feel cold, all he wanted was to find a sheltered corner quickly.

The nausea in his stomach hadn’t subsided, and after the car ride, it felt even worse.

Accompanied by abdominal bloating and pain.

Supporting his weary body, Yan Shu entered the emergency room lobby.

Wei Tingxiao, with headphones on, was engrossed in the video, the volume turned up high, completely oblivious to the outside world.

He never expected that a seemingly cold and somewhat naive guy would be so hot on stage.

Using “hot” might not be the right term; it should be dazzling.

In the video, Yan Shu’s dancing was bold and fierce, showing that he had practiced many times offstage, becoming so skilled that every move was ingrained in his muscle memory.

Wei Tingxiao was a trained actor, with no experience as an idol. He only knew how to perform, so singing and dancing were like a hellish process of conditioning his limbs.

For him, singing and dancing were ten times harder than acting, so he sometimes admired idols.

This young man wasn’t bad.

With looks, talent, and proper training, he could shine. Wei Tingxiao couldn’t understand why Longfeng Entertainment insisted on pushing him in the direction of black publicity.

Wei Tingxiao watched the video repeatedly with an appreciative gaze.

Just as he was about to play it for the sixth time, the door to the IV drip rest area suddenly swung open.

The nurse who had administered the drip to Wei Tingxiao before led in a young man, helping him hold the medication bottle while supporting him with her other hand.

Upon seeing someone enter, Wei Tingxiao instinctively pulled up his mask, worried about being recognized.

However, when he saw the person’s face clearly, his eyes widened in astonishment.

“If you’re feeling particularly unwell, you can lie down in the next room. There are a few empty beds there.”

While assisting the young man, the nurse felt his body temperature was quite low.

The young man was very thin, and upon touching him, all she felt were bones, hardly any flesh.

In such cold weather, dressed so lightly, it would be strange if he didn’t fall ill.

The senior nurse wasn’t a fan of celebrities; aside from recognizing Wei Tingxiao, she didn’t know any other young stars. Seeing the handsome appearance and refined attire of the young man, she guessed he was also from the entertainment industry.

In the entertainment industry, it was easy to become sub-healthy1the line between healthy and sick due to irregular meals and sleep patterns, leading to decreased immunity. Over time, even a slight cold could become severe.

“It’s okay, I’ll just sit here. Thank you,” the young man replied.

Yan Shu’s vision blurred, and he couldn’t quite make out the nurse’s appearance. He found a seat nearby, feeling too weak to stand, his legs like jelly, head heavy and throbbing, as if it might explode at any moment.

When he used to fall ill like this, his father would prepare a particularly bitter medicine for him to drink, which he always resisted due to the taste.

Now, with injections available, Yan Shu was more afraid of taking medicine than getting a shot.

The sensation of the medicine flowing into his body was quite strange; it was cold. His hand, where the drip was administered, was already cold, and it felt even colder now.

Thankfully, the rest area had heating, which at least alleviated the shivering in his body slightly.

“Alright, rest for now. If you feel uncomfortable, just call me,” the nurse kindly said before hanging up the medication bottle and leaving.

Yan Shu’s eyelids immediately drooped, his vision alternating between black and white. Supporting his head with the hand that didn’t have a needle, he pressed against his abdomen in an awkward position and dozed off in the chair.

Wei Tingxiao, seated diagonally across from Yan Shu, observed silently:

The two were quite far apart, and Wei Tingxiao figured that the young man probably had no idea there was someone else sitting in the room.

To receive company for a drip late at night, and it happened to be the person he had just watched over and over again in that video… Wei couldn’t quite describe the subtle feelings in his heart.

“Tsk, at least he’s an artist. How come he doesn’t have an assistant accompanying him to the hospital?” Wei Tingxiao muttered under his breath.

He held a deep disdain for the management of Longfeng Entertainment in handling artists.

Letting artists fend for themselves – the manager was making easy money.

No assistant, no sign of the manager, where were his teammates?

Wasn’t he in a boy band? Shouldn’t the other members take care of him?

Wei Tingxiao wasn’t entirely sure of the situation, but from what he could see now, Yan Shu was undoubtedly a pitiable child isolated in the workplace.

Considering Yan Shu’s relatively formal attire, he must have attended some event or dinner party. Wei Tingxiao had to admit, the outfit was tastefully chosen.

Different from the style he saw in the video, it gave off a new kind of feeling.

With Yan Shu now asleep, Wei Tingxiao couldn’t help but openly stare at him for quite some time.

Having seen plenty of handsome stars in the industry, Wei Tingxiao felt that he himself was quite good-looking, so he found it relatively commonplace. However, Yan Shu’s beauty carried a heartbreaking sense of fragility that always made Wei Tingxiao want to steal more glances.

It was as if he was afraid that the next moment, the other person would vanish into thin air.

Xiao Lin suddenly woke from his nap and saw his Xiao-ge staring intently at another patient without blinking.

He hesitantly asked, “Xiao-ge, do you know him?”

Wei Tingxiao snapped back, “I didn’t know him before, but I do now.”

Huh… How did they suddenly become acquainted? Did Xiao-ge do something while he was dozing off?

Confused, Xiao Lin rubbed his head.

“*Hatchoo!*” Yan Shu, leaning against the chair, slept restlessly.

He sneezed in his dream, feeling alternately hot and cold, with his head on fire and limbs icy.

He was enduring this torment in a state of contrasting extremes of heat and cold.

But at that moment, he suddenly felt enveloped in warmth, surrounded by a fuzzy and soft sensation that was particularly comforting. Subconsciously, he leaned forward a bit.

With a plush milk velvet blanket in hand, just after covering the young man, a warm face pressed against the back of his hand.

Wei Tingxiao was momentarily startled but didn’t push away.

“Xiao-ge, let me do it. It’s inconvenient for you with just one hand.” Xiao Lin, who was helping Wei Tingxiao hold the medication bottle with his raised arm, was full of energy.

“I’m perfectly fine. Do you think I can’t carry someone with one hand?” Wei Tingxiao raised an eyebrow, making a casual yet teasing remark.

Bending down to look at the head he was gently supporting, a smile crept onto his lips.

Yan Shu’s face was truly no bigger than his palm; he could cover it with just one hand2I can see it… it’s the age of old yaoi hands .

Finding a comfortable “pillow”, Yan Shu rested on it without moving.

“Xiao Lin, go outside and inform the nurse. Prepare the VIP ward.”

Xiao Lin hesitated, seeing the last bit of medicine about to be administered from the bottle. Eventually, he decided not to speak up and went to arrange the “room booking”.

Ten minutes later.

Movie Emperor Wei, successfully checked into the VIP ward, accompanied by…

“Oh, he’s that Yan Shu! I just recognized him!”

With one hand, Wei Tingxiao placed Yan Shu on the bed. At that moment, the face that had been slightly drooping became clear.

“Don’t make noise; you’re about to wake him up.” Wei Tingxiao noticed Yan Shu furrowing his brows and quietly reminded Xiao Lin to keep quiet.

Xiao Lin zipped his mouth shut and helped settle the unconscious young man.

The VIP ward had a nice environment with a comfortable single bed, fruits and snacks on the coffee table, a temperature-controlled space, and a ventilation system.

Before entering the ward, Wei Tingxiao removed the needle from his hand. The nurse didn’t ask any questions, seeing that the VIP ward had already been paid for.

After completing these tasks, Xiao Lin stood by, unsure whether to advise Xiao-ge to leave. The antibiotic shot was done, and it would be more comfortable to rest at home rather than staying in the hospital.

But with Xiao-ge’s posture, it felt like he was treating the hospital room like a hotel.

Staying in the hospital was fine, but the only hospital bed was already occupied, leaving only a short and narrow sofa beside it, not big enough for one person to sleep on.

Xiao Lin couldn’t understand Xiao-ge’s thought process.

Before, Xiao-ge didn’t seem to care about other artists, so was this considered an act of kindness now?

“Maybe I should book another room. Xiao-ge, you should rest too.” The concerned Xiao Lin always disliked seeing his boss strained, so he lowered his voice as he spoke.

The sky outside the window was pitch black, raining heavily, with no moonlight in sight.

“No need. I’ll leave in a while. You go back to the car; there’s nothing more for you to do here.” Wei Tingxiao took an orange from the fruit platter and peeled it, putting a few slices into his mouth.

He hadn’t eaten dinner and didn’t feel hungry before, but now he did.

“Alright.” Xiao Lin obediently responded, thinking that Wei Tingxiao must be hungry. As he planned to leave, he decided to order a late-night snack.

The VIP ward quickly returned to silence.

Wei Tingxiao sat on the sofa, eating fruit while observing the young man on the bed.

Yan Shu’s head was turned towards Wei Tingxiao.

At this moment, lying flat, he was no longer in that uncomfortable position from before.

As his body relaxed, his fair swan-like neck was exposed, with semi-dry strands of hair falling loosely around his eyes.

The elaborate tie on his shirt wrinkled to the side, the chain on his chest pin entangled with the clothes. The buttons at the bottom of the shirt had been inadvertently undone, revealing a glimpse of his slender, soft waist.

The scene before him carried a disheveled beauty, a pure and alluring artistic vibe.

Wei Tingxiao, almost involuntarily, was bewitched for a moment and found himself pressing the camera button before he realized what he was doing.

He licked his lips, which now tasted of oranges, feeling a dryness in his throat.

“This orange is not at all thirst-quenching.” Wei Tingxiao guiltily picked up his thermos cup and gulped down several sips.

Why was he acting like a pervert, taking sneaky photos?

If this got out, his image would be ruined.

Wei Tingxiao thought, annoyed with himself.

With resolve, he pressed the delete button on the photo.

Just as he deleted one, another identical one popped up.

He deleted another, and another would appear.

Wei Tingxiao’s mind went blank as he clicked into the photo gallery and saw a series of Yan Shu’s photos.

“…”

Damn it! He really lost it. How did it end up on continuous shooting mode?

*Cough!* The perverted Wei, feeling embarrassed, coughed into his fist, turning his face away in discomfort, afraid to look at Yan Shu again.
