Once again, Gu Yan felt the familiar sensation wash over him, and on regaining his senses, he heard the ever so familiar voice alerting him.

The vertigo he experienced from the teleportation process subsided quickly, and during  this period of time, Gu Yan took his time to study his surroundings.

He was standing before a car with its door open. Beside him stood a man who was dressed completely in formal attire, his hand sported a long and old scar as he made a gesture of, ‘please go ahead’.

Except, this ‘gesture’ was probably one that left little room for negotiation.

“Is there anything that grandmaster Gu has yet to finish?” Seeing the dark-haired youth stand unmoving on the same spot for a couple of seconds, the man in charge of escorting him safely to their destination, spoke.

Although he referred to him as ‘Grandmaster’, it was easy to tell by his tone that he didn’t have an ounce of respect towards this grandmaster.

But this truly couldn’t be blamed on him. After all, how was it possible for a normal person to respect someone who didn’t have any actual talent and only relied on words and deceit to speak of giving life to the dead?

However, if one’s ability to trick others could be considered as talent, then the person who he was in charge of escorting truly had some talent in that area.

To be able to fool even his employer whose IQ was nearing 200, even when everyone around could clearly tell that this dark-haired youth was a mere swindler, his own employer was truly blind to believe this person without hesitation.

However, the consequences were severe. For example, this person now had no choice but to carry out a task even at the cost of his own life.

Gu Yan’s momentary silence fell into the eyes of the man, and became one of wanting to back out. With the man’s signal, the people who were originally standing some distance away suddenly surrounded him, sealing off his escape route in an instant.

“Grandmaster Gu, please go ahead.” Having been deployed here to personally ‘escort’ a person, Song Ling had yet to fail such a mission.

With his ability to analyse his situation stronger than most others, Gu Yan already knew which part of the storyline he was in, and even knew what was coming next. However, he forced himself to calmly take a seat in the car.

Song Ling had originally thought that he would have no choice but to use some force to coerce him, but seeing the other person get in cooperatively, he instantly ceased his actions, and closed the door.

At least he has some willpower. Song Ling’s impression of him increased slightly.

Neither of them spoke during the journey while the car slowly drove away from the bustling city and headed towards the suburbs. Around them were several black-coloured inconspicuous looking cars serving as a layer of defense. Meanwhile, Gu Yan sat expressionlessly in the back of the car, thinking hard of a way to save himself from the impending disaster waiting for this cannon fodder.

‘The rules’ would help him adjust the settings of the character he was playing, such as his name and appearance, whenever he went to a new world. However, when it came to the plot, ‘The rules’ were of no help, so he had to save himself.

Before teleportation, Gu Yan already knew which world he would be going to and had done sufficient mental preparation. Therefore, he was able to maintain his calm even in this situation.

As an author who had walked down the path of blackened but popular novels for five whole years, he had actually only written four novels during this period of time and each one of them contained several hundreds of thousands of words. Having only tens of thousands of words for a stallion novel would be too shameful to speak of.

Four novels, four worlds. He had already experienced three of them, and this was the last one…

This novel had a modern setting, but it wasn’t a regular modern world. There existed many unscientific things that defied logic.

Take for example, his job as a divination master which sounded extremely dubious. Therefore, things like gods and ghosts were even more illogical.

What was a divination master? No matter how prestigious they were in the past, this was the 21st Century. Nowadays, divination masters were more commonly known as ‘fortune tellers’ or ‘fengshui[1] masters’. A more negative connotation to refer to them would be ‘divination scoundrels’.

Divination masters who were truly capable of changing one’s fate were considered as going against the heavens, and had to pay an unimaginable price for it. Nonetheless, it was possible for such masters to exist.

As for those without this ability, they were truly ‘divination scoundrels’, whose purpose was only to swindle money. Not only were they unable to solve people’s crisis’, some of them would even worsen their plight.

Ah, the character Gu Yan had taken over belonged to the latter case.

The original host relied on sleight of hands and his ability to fool others with his words to make a living among other great figures. That was, until his ‘greed’ caused him to offend a rather influential family in the capital, also known as the Shen Family.

Roughly half a month ago, an ancestral shrine which the Shen family had spent a large fortune to construct suddenly became haunted by an evil spirit without any warning. Those living there had short lives, and anyone who survived to get out suffered some sort of calamity.

If it were merely these two reasons, the Shen family wouldn’t be anxious to the point of being unable to stand steadily. As for why things had progressed to this stage, it was because the Shen Family’s business which had been going smoothly encountered the same problems half a month ago. The losses they suffered wasn’t a small amount, yet it continued to show signs of worsening.

The Shen family could ignore human lives but they definitely couldn’t overlook threats to their interests.

They promised a decent amount of remuneration to display their sincerity in search of a fengshui master who could help them solve this problem. The character that Gu Yan was playing had been taken in by the reward and thought of picking up a simple buck before taking flight from the capital.

However, not only was he unable to gain any benefits, he wasn’t successful in running away. And now, he was trying to push away this responsibility that was beyond his ability.

If the plot continued to progress in the original direction, then the original host would become cannon fodder in the Shen Family’s ancestral home and have his energy sucked from him. The bitter fate that awaited him was to be sucked dry into a human jerky.

He was once again, a cannon fodder. Staring out the window, watching as the scenery rapidly changed, Gu Yan silently thought to himself.

In the last two worlds he had transmigrated into the role of a cannon fodder who died especially tragically. Gu Yan already understood the reader’s grudge was for him to not have a peaceful life. Wanting to transmigrate into a powerful character was impossible; Gu Yan had calmly accepted this fact.

[Host…] Towards the dark-haired youth’s silence every time its host randomly transmigrated into a character with a tragic ending, as a system, 037 couldn’t help feeling guilty.

It was already the last world, but its host had once again transmigrated into a cannon fodder with a tragic ending by chance. Was this because of itself?

If only it had more authority when it came to transmigration to allow its host to freely choose the character he wanted. However, it currently did not have the ability to do so, and required an upgrade in order to achieve this level of authority.

[It’s not your fault.] The road to the suburbs was rather bumpy. Sitting upright in the backseat of the car, Gu Yan responded to the system who was recklessly blaming itself, in his consciousness. Afterwards, he added, [Since I’ve been able to live well in the last few worlds, this world shouldn’t be any different.]

[Oh.] It must believe its host’s words! If the system had a body, 037 would most likely be nodding at its host.

[Good.] Easily coaxing his system, Gu Yan always had a feeling that his system’s way of thinking was rather pure and simple, and reality proved that he was right.

Even if it was because of his promise to his family’s lover, he couldn’t die in the Shen Family’s ancestral home. He had told the other person, ‘Wait for me to find you’ and since he had already said so, he must accomplish what he had promised in order to not let his lover wait in vain.

Thinking of this point, Gu Yan silently breathed a heavy sigh, and continued to tidy up his messy thoughts. He needed to find a way to survive  the upcoming crisis.

Something like this was extremely simple for his family’s system but in reality, Gu Yan didn’t think matters were that simple. According to the plot, he would enter the ancestral home with two other people later on. Among the other two, one was the world’s protagonist while the other one was a famous expert in the spiritual world.

The former had the protagonist’s halo to preserve his life while the latter’s ability wasn’t weak; he had means of self-protection. Only him, this divination scoundrel who hadn’t even awoken a divine eye, had muddled his way in. By the principle of choosing only soft persimmons[2],  if this evil spirit didn’t go after him, who should it go after?

Moreover, not only did the original host not know half a lick of cultivation, his body carried a ray of primordial energy of chaos whose existence was akin to a godly panacea for spirits and ghosts. To give them such a fat pig for free, anyone who let it pass must be crazy.

In the original storyline, the host prioritised his reputation over his life. After entering the ancestral shrine, he went off alone and the outcome could be seen.

Until now, the numerous worlds that Gu Yan had experienced would allow him to unhesitatingly choose the latter when presented with both options of pride and life. Only by preserving his life would he be able to search for his family’s lover. Moreover, this pride couldn’t be completely counted as his, losing some face wasn’t a big deal.

The relatively safest method was to follow and stick to the protagonist’s side in order to be protected by the protagonist’s halo. That was why, after their three-person meeting, Ye Chengyu found that the dark-haired youth who was obviously a simple commoner seemed to have the intention to stick with him.

Ye Chengyu didn’t expose his identity as a normal person. A person’s fate ultimately depended on their choices, just like how the dark-haired youth had chosen to participate in this matter. From his appearance, Ye Chengyu could predict that the future which awaited him as one of calamity and tragedy…

Wait… As if he had seen something unimaginable, Ye Chengyu’s expression froze.

It had clearly been a calamitous future, he had seen it without a doubt. So, how did it suddenly become an auspicious one?

[1]Fengshui: A form of superstition common among Asians. Related to luck.

[2] Principle of choosing soft persimmons: which means to say, choose the weakest since persimmons which have yet to completely develop are too hard.
